    Historical note :

The Iron Cross was renewed on 1 September 1939 by Adolf Hitler as a war decoration and extended by the level of the Knight's Cross. This took the position of the Prussian Pour le Merite. To the Knight's Cross various elevations were introduced in the course of the war such as oak leaves, swords, oak leaves with swords, brilliants and gilded oak leaves with swords and brilliants. The Iron Cross 1939 consisted of 4 classes: Grand Cross, Knight's Cross (with its elevations), 1st class and 2nd class. In contrast to the original Prussian award, the Iron Cross was awarded in 1939 on a different ribbon and was awarded only to fighters. The crosses were slightly thicker in production and the sides were also made of non-ferrous metal silver-plated. It is characteristic that the first crosses have a silver frame which is slightly narrower than the later made silver-plated frames. These are often referred to as crosses in the shinkle Form.
